Harmful Awareness
Hello, Beautiful Souls!
Recently I started listening to the audiobook "Cleaning Up Your Mental Mess" by Dr. Caroline Leaf. So much of the book has resonated with me and inspired me. However, one thing has really stuck with me. Awareness without proper mind management tools can actually be harmful to our mental state (paraphrased).
As someone who has dealt with depression, anxiety and unhealthy people pleasing this hit home. I have been acutely aware of my short comings, what I want to change, and how I want to feel. But I noticed that I didn't know what to do or how to do it. This added to the vicious cycle I was already dealing with.
Diet, exercise, counseling, therapy, mindfulness and/or meditation can be very helpful tools and great building blocks for a healthier, happier life. However, I believe we need to incorporate mind management skills in order to sustain that healthier, happier life. Life will never be perfect, but we can learn the skills needed to help us cope with or thrive in the deserts we find ourselves in.
