Motivated or Disciplined?

Updated: Aug 9, 2023

Hello, Beautiful Soul!

This blog post was inspired by a conversation with my oldest son. He was explaining that he wants to learn discipline because motivation doesn’t last and it’s based in emotion.

On the journey of personal growth and goal achievement, two key things often come into play: motivation and discipline. While both are essential, they differ in their nature and impact on our journey. Understanding the distinction between motivation and discipline can unlock the secrets to consistent progress and lasting results.

Motivation vs. Discipline:

Motivation:

Motivation is that initial spark that ignites our desire to take action, to move toward a goal. It is the feeling of enthusiasm, inspiration, or excitement that propels us forward. Motivation tends to be fueled by external factors, such as rewards, recognition, or short-term goals. While motivation can be powerful, it often fluctuates and is susceptible to external influences, making it unreliable as a sole driving force. It is emotion based and can be fleeting.

Discipline:

Discipline, on the other hand, is the consistent commitment and self-control required to stay focused and persevere, even when motivation wanes. It is the ability to stick to a plan or routine, make deliberate choices aligned with our goals, and overcome obstacles. Discipline is an internal strength that relies on personal values, determination, and long-term vision.

There are several ways to help develop discipline.  One of those is having a clear understanding of your goal. What is driving you towards this goal?  What is your ultimate desire?

Motivation may ignite your journey, but discipline will keep you steadily progressing towards your goals, even when motivation wanes. By understanding the distinction between motivation and discipline, and using strategies to cultivate discipline, you can create a solid foundation for lasting success. Embrace discipline as a lifelong companion on your path to personal growth.

Remember, discipline is a skill that can be developed and refined over time. Stay committed, embrace the process, and celebrate the milestones along the way. Your disciplined efforts will bring about remarkable results and transform your aspirations into reality.

Let’s work together to develop discipline in your life, beautiful soul!

“Everything we want to do in life requires discipline. And like strength, flexibility, and endurance, it can be built up over time.” -Laird Hamilton
